Rough Snowflake Obsidian from Utah. Obsidian is an organically created glass, formed through felsic lava that rapidly cools after exploding past the earth’s crust. It exhibits conchoidal fracturing and is a hardness of 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale. Typical Obsidian is a semi-translucent black that can have slight tints of green or brown. This Obsidian is black with natural "snowflakes" of light gray spherulites. The spots are formed through devitrification when molecules within glass (which has no crystal structure) change their structure and crystallize.
Size ranges between 1 - 15lb pieces. Typical pieces are approximately 5lbs and 3"-7" long.
