These pieces of optical calcite come from Mexico, and are available in a variety of sizes. This calcite is a pretty translucent pink hue and has naturally straight edges created from its cleavage properties. The rhombohedral formations also produce double-refraction, which is why this material is also known as Optical Calcite. When you look at objects through the calcite, it splits the rays of light and displays two images of the same object.
Pink calcites are often called Manganoan or Mangano Calcite, as they are rich in manganese. The manganese can also act as an activator for fluorescence, especially under longwave UV. These pieces all fluoresce a very bright pink under UV light.
