This material shows jagged edges from the full coral shape, which is different in appearance from naturally tumbled pieces that can be surface collected. Partially composed of calcite, Petoskey Stones have a hardness between 3 and 5.
Size Range:
Most individual pieces between 2lb and 6lbs, but larger pieces up to 15lbs are available. If you have a preference on the size of rough you receive, please describe in your order Notes.
Petoskey Stones are a type of fossilized coral that can be found on the beaches of the Great Lakes, primarily Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, or in rock quarries across the upper Midwest. The polyps of the ancient coral, hexagonaria, create the honeycomb patterning seen on the stones. While also a fossil, the Petoskey Stone is the official State Stone of Michigan!
