Dendritic Opal is technically a form of agate (microcrystalline silica) rather than a type of opal (microscopic silica with no crystalline structure). Since it typically displays opaque chalcedony rather than translucent, this name distinguishes it from other Dendritic Agates that have significantly different appearances. It is also often called Merlinite.
