Rocky Top and Owyhee Rose Picture Jaspers Location
The map below shows the location for the picture jaspers named Rocky Top (“Picture Jaspers” by Hans Gamma pg. 26) and Owyhee Rose. These deposits are very old, probably only mined once and are very small. The names of the deposits were applied by Darrell “Jake” Jakobitz as the original information on this deposit is long gone. The deposits are high on a hill to the right of the road, not too far from Craig Gulch. This southern edge of the Picture Jasper area is documented in Hans Gamma’s book, “Picture Jasper, Treasures of the Owyhee Area, Oregon.” It is approached from Hwy 95 at mile post 5 to Rockville. Just past Rockville turn left on Leslie Gulch Road and then right at the BLM sign restricting the collection of petrified wood. All of the roads are dirt.
