Sikhote-Alin Meteorites have high iron content and come from the Sikhote-Alin Mountains in Russia. At 10:38am on February 12, 1947, a bright fireball appeared in the sky and exploded in our atmosphere before the pieces landed among the mountains. The flash and sound of the fall were observed for almost 200 miles around the impact, and the long smoke trail inspired a commissioned stamp on the 10-year anniversary of the event - painted by an artist who witnessed the event. Pictured next to a quarter for size.
