Hyalite is a type of potch or common opal, meaning it does not have the color play that precious opals have. Due to amounts of uranyl, a uranium residue, it fluoresces a bright white or green under UV light. The chemical formula for Hyalite is SiO2 · nH2O. The little clusters are clear and botyroidal, sometimes with a very slight blue or yellow tint.
Sizes range from approximately 4g to 12g. Shown with quarter for size reference.
Photographed in normal lighting and under 365nm UV
(fluorescence will also show under typical 395nm longwave UV)
