Orthoceras in Matrix (Morocco)

$19.99

From Morocco, believed to be from the Devonian age. These pieces show the dark gray to black limestone host with an orthoceras fossil protruding out. The fossil is shaped out of the limestone and the host is chipped away to better reveal the 3-dimensional shell. The revealed section is then polished to mimic the shape of the overall cone. Pictures are representative of the fossil you will receive, but each piece is unique. Choose from a singular polished fossil in matrix or a pair revealed in matrix.

Singular Fossil: $19.99
approx. 2" x 4"
Double Fossil: $24.99
approx. 2" x 4"

These extinct nautiloid cephalopods had a straight conical shell called an orthocone. The shells are preserved in marine rock, most often limestone. Though these fossils are almost always simply called Orthoceras, slightly different species are found all over the world. They may be more accurately described as "Orthoceratidae" to include other genus, as paleontologists use the name orthoceras specifically to indicate the type species from Middle Ordovician Sweden and Baltic States regions.
