New Minerals & 2015 Calendar

New Minerals

We have restocked our mineral cases in the store with some fantastic pieces from around the world!  On display this week we have large pieces of Chalcopyrite.   Chalcopyrite is a Copper Iron Sulfide from Mexico.  The mineral contains colorful flashes of blue, green, yellow, and red.  The beautiful coloring is completely natural.
A new shipment of Sparkle Pyrite is also on display.  These octahedral crystals beautifully reflect light and are just dazzling!  Sparkle Pyrite originates in Peru.  The natural ocatahedral crystals form in clusters and are made of iron and sulfur.

Explore these and the rest of our minerals on our site:

Intarsia

The Gem Shop has a new selection of Intarsia Cabochons and Beads!  Intarsia is a high expression of lapidary art requiring a close mastery. Each piece is eccentric and highly collectible – a true work of art.  The Gem Shop’s owner, Gene Mueller, has an MFA in painting and has won awards in the Cutting Edge Competition® for his Intarsia, and has crafted and designed many of the pieces. Each center stone piece was carefully chosen and cut by Gene over an 8 month period.

For thousands of years artisans have been layering stone striving to create the most beautiful scene possible. This process is commonly referred to as Intarsia. Intarsia traces its history back to Italy and the Renaissance where it is called Pietra dura or pietre dure. This is a term for the inlay technique of using thinly cut and polished stones to create images. The stonework is glued stone-by-stone to a substrate after having previously been sliced and cut in different shape sections; and then assembled together so precisely that the contact between each section is practically invisible. It first appeared in Rome in the 16th century, reaching its full maturity in Florence. Intarsia items are generally crafted on green, white or black base stones.

Gene's Mining Adventure

Our magnificent miner Gene has just returned from mining in Oregon.  He was mining at the Beverly Marie Claim, which is a claim in the Graveyard Point collecting area.  Gene and his trusty companions mined on the east side of the claim and discovered a darker colored Graveyard Point Plume Agate.  They returned with hundreds of pounds of material, which has nice concentrated plumes and some gold and black plumes.  The new Graveyard Point Plume can be checked out on our site:  http://thegemshop.com/collections/rough-rock-1/products/graveyard-point-plume-agate-2014

Regency Rose Plume Agate, which is a variation of Graveyard Point Plume Agate was also mined.  It comes from a different location at the Beverly Marie Claim.  The agate has plumes like the classic Graveyard Point Plume Agate, but with more red or rosy coloring in an amber colored background.  It is available on our site: http://thegemshop.com/collections/rough-rock-1/products/graveyard-point-plume-agate-regency-rose-mine

Gene also assisted with mining at the Linda Marie Claim.  Linda Marie Agate, which was previously known as Christmas Tree Agate, displays rich green, red, and white plumes.  He returned with a sample of this material as well.  We have a limited quantity of this material available: http://thegemshop.com/collections/rough-rock-1/products/linda-marie-plume-agate

Read about Gene's past trips to Graveyard Point on our mining pages.  Look for a complete new report in the mining section from Graveyard Point and the Linda Marie Claim in the near future. Mining Operations: http://thegemshop.com/pages/mining-rock-locations
