These rare Polish specimens are a combination of galena (the silvery metallic part), sphalerite (the brown bands), and wurzite (the tan/vanilla color) which fluoresces orange under ultraviolet light. Some also contain a little pyrite. They occur in masses with concentric layers of the three or sometimes four minerals in sedimentary rock. Schalenblende is the German name which has carried over directly into English, although they are also called "brunckite" in Australia. Although mined in Europe, this stone is less well known in the USA and correspondingly more rare. Schalenblende is said to facilitate clarity of thought, vitality and strength of will, inspiration and decisiveness. Schalenblende promotes a positive attitude to body image.

All pieces are face-polished, and most have a flat saw-cut on the backside, while some have the irregular end-cuts on the backside.
