from the Current Mining Operation
Graveyard Pt. Oregon
Spring 2009

RAIN! RAIN! RAIN! It has poured for three days. Needless to say mining has come to a screeching halt. The canyon that is usually bone dry has now washed twice. It has had up to 5 feet of water at a time. The road has washed out as well, and we are stuck out here until it dries. No trips to town today.

The rain has stopped, but it is still very muddy. Walking around the mine it feels like I’m walking on butter. We were able to run the excavator today and hit some good Angelwing specimens. They are very fragile, and I hope they make it back to Wisconsin in one piece.

We were able to go into town last night and get food and other supplies. The muddy road made it fairly treacherous, but we made it out with the 4-wheel drive. Today we ran the machine again and hit the cave. We had boarded it up last year in hopes to open it up again, but it caved in. It does not look like we will be able to go spelunking this year.

Today we discovered a vein of agate with nice multi-color plumes. Parts of the plume are pink and yellow and other parts have pink and white. We also came across some very nice angelwing specimens that sing! When the specimen is tapped with a chisel it rings like a tuning fork.
