Rough Rock

If you travel in the Midwest this spring or summer, come and see over 60 tons of rock in our rock yard. Our basement (with more rock to pick through) is also open. We're located about 100 miles north of Chicago. Bring your camera and take a picture next to our 8000 lb. petrified wood log.

The African continent is rich with mineral resources including agates and jaspers. The Gem Shop has imported rock from Morocco, South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Malawi, and Madagascar, the large island off the southeast coast of the African continent.

From Asia The Gem Shop has rock available from India, Indonesia and Turkey.

The Gem Shop has imported rock from several countries in South America, including Argentina, Brazil, and Peru. Our latest "finds" include the old stock of Polyhedroids from Brazil. This rock was mined in the 1970s and has been in storage for many years. Our supply is limited and can not be replaced since the deposit in Brazil is depleted. We also have Inca Agate available in vein and nodular forms.

The Gem Shop also has plenty of rock formed in the good ol' United States... although it probably started to form long before any part of it was called that. These rocks includes many of the scenic picture jaspers of the northwest.

The miscellaneous section comprises of rock from all over the world excluding those areas already covered by the other categories.

The Gem Shop rock lots are made to be as equal as possible. They are created to give each customer as fair a chance at the best selection of the material as possible. It also allows them to be priced lower than material where selection is allowed.

The tumbling material is an assortment of rocks and gems that are sized for tumbling. To see a list of available tumbling machines, various grits, and other tumbling supplies please visit the Lapidary Equipment page.
